High School Basketball Forum: District Championships-Boys Basketball

Posted by Slim shady on Wed, Feb 6, 2019, at 7:27 PM:

District tournament time is not far away for high schools in the region.

I have a trivia question. There are 7 Southeast Missouri schools that have never won a district tournament in boys basketball. (I’m not counting Kingston or St. Paul out of Farmington). Can you name all of them??

  • Leopold

-- Posted by Semoballs on Wed, Feb 6, 2019, at 10:15 PM
  • Delta

-- Posted by Semoballs on Wed, Feb 6, 2019, at 10:45 PM
  • Delta has won two. (76 and one other in the 90’s, I think)

    Leopold is correct, though.

  • Zalma won the state championship back in 40s or 50s. That's when there was no classification. When you won a state title back in those days you done something.

  • Zalma won in 1941, I believe.

  • Slim shady, I thought it sometime in the forties, wasn't for sure though. I remember going the general store there I think it was called Pape's grocery. They had one of the goals and maybe some names and records on the wall from that team. The store burnt down several years ago. I don't know if they lost all of it or not.

  • I dont know who all it could be? Leopold, marquand, Meadow Heights, Oak Ridge, Southland, Greenville and Delta C 7?

-- Posted by The deltan on Thu, Feb 7, 2019, at 2:13 PM
  • How about Campbell?

-- Posted by The deltan on Thu, Feb 7, 2019, at 2:19 PM
  • East Prairie, Leopold, Oak Ridge, Marquand, Greenville, Campbell, Southland.

Disclaimer—Arbyrd won one in the early 60’s, before consolidation with Cardwell to become Southland. Lutesville (Woodland) won one in 1942.

  • Next question:

Can you name the top 10 schools that have won the most district titles in basketball?? Two will be extremely obvious.

Sorry just saw that prior post about Lutesville.

  • Going to take a serious upset for any of the 7 “no district titles” teams to get off that list this year. East Prairie and Oak Ridge seem to be the two best teams of that group this year, and both have steep hills to climb in their respective districts. Charleston and NMCC standing in EP’s way, and in C2D3 #1 seed Oran is 23-1 and looking like heavy favorites, although they only topped Oak Ridge by 3 on their home court earlier this season.

  • I would say that Campbell has an outside chance this year in Class 2, but probably a better chance in the next two years. A young squad.

I think the pressure or urgency to win for them will be in ‘20 or ‘21. If they don’t capture the districts in the next couple of years, they probably never will.

-- Posted by Slim shady on Sun, Feb 10, 2019, at 5:38 PM
  • I agree with you Slim. Campbell has a outside shot this year. Next year they will be returning every player and the year after will return every player but 1. A Blake Fowler led team will keep them in every game. Oak Ridge and David Layton will be the only other team that has a shot this year. Class 2 districts are going to be dog fights.

  • To stray away from the trivia for a moment, does anyone know when the local Class 4 and 5 district tournaments are?

    -- Posted by semo501 on Mon, Feb 11, 2019, at 10:38 AM
  • Semo501, probably on or after the 23rd that week of.

-- Posted by The deltan on Mon, Feb 11, 2019, at 12:56 PM
  • They should be the week after the class 1-3 districts. Feb. 23rd - Feb. 27th.

  • Zalma in 1940... other area “in the old days” state championships...Fruitland 32, Bismarck 44, Jackson 34, Cape Central 54, of course Puxico 51-52, South Iron 65, Van Buren 60 and Matthews 68.

  • Indian - In which years did Lilbourn win titles in the 70's? I know they had a run w/ some guys names McFerren and didn't a Lennies McFerren led Howardville make a run in the 60's of deep playoff runs?

-- Posted by AgentMan on Sat, Feb 16, 2019, at 8:19 AM
  • Lilbourn 74 and 75... Howardville lost 4ot game to Bradleyville in 68 class S championship game.

    -- Posted by indian73 on Sat, Feb 16, 2019, at 9:32 AM
  • Lennies had graduated before the 68 team. Claude and Ernest mcferren and their nephew Frankie Robinson were on the 74 team with 2 losses and Ernest and Frankie were on the 33-0 75 team

-- Posted by Ernie D on Sat, Feb 16, 2019, at 2:22 PM
  • Lilbourn also had a 2nd place finish in 78 losing to Nixa and Kent Russell’s 47 point performance. Yes, Nixa was class 2 back then
