Other College Sports Discussion: College Basketball Recruiting

*
Posted by BuckMajor on Wed, Apr 30, 2014, at 10:20 AM:

I wanted to start a college basketball recruiting thread because AAU is really picking up steam and will continue to do so in coming weeks and as the summer progresses. This will be a good place to keep up with the progress of 2015 and 2016 elite recruits, and we might even see a commitment or two in the coming months. And college players changing/transfering or coaching changes could be talked about here as well. Lots of college coaches are out recruiting now. Everyone knows AAU is really what defines a players "star rankings", when the scholarships are offered, and when we start to hear about some of these under the radar recruits that suddenly are ranked in the top 10 nationally. The 2015 class is pretty good and I believe the 2016 is shaping up to be even better. So it should be a really exciting AAU season.

I think the thread needs to start off by wrapping up the 2014 class as far as the top 100 goes. 7 foot, 240 center Myles Turner is the No.2 player in the nation (Not No.2 in my opinion) and the last Top 100 recruit to make a commitment. His decision will air live on ESPNU at 3PM. His final list is down to Kansas, Texas, Oklahoma St., SMU, Duke, Ohio St., and Texas A&M. Many believe he is down to Kansas, Texas, Oklahoma St. and SMU. I personally feel that he will either pick Kansas or Texas (I will guess Texas). He is pretty good player and even shoots the 3 really well. He can run the court and block shots. I think he needs some work in the post and on his around the basket game. Other 2014 recruits like Okafor, Alexander, and Towns can really push him around in the post and he seems to have a bit of trouble getting quality shots off of people his same size. But he is a nice pick up for whoever lands him!

Sticking with 7-footers, the No. 5 player in the 2015 class, Stephen Zimmerman has released his Top 8 schools today. They include Kansas, UNLV, UNC, Indiana, Louisville, UK, UCLA, and Arizona. He has stated that Calipari, Pitino, and Sean Miller have recruited him the hardest, and many believe Arizona to be the favorite. He is from Las Vegas and has already visited Arizona. In my opinion he is the most offensively skilled big man in the 2015 class.

Myles Turner will be a longerhorn next year. Nice pick up for Rick Barnes. Not often do you see Bill Self snubbed! I will be interesting to see how Turner and Cam Ridley share minutes.

It looks like Kansas point gaurd Naadir Tharpe will be transfering. Ummm... wow... thats kind of a big deal. Kansas had good recruits coming in next year, all big guys, but not a point guard! They were really going to rely on him. Could Texas sneak in and end their conference winning streak!?

Jayson Tatum says UK, UNC, and Duke have been recruiting him the hardest.

  • If mizzou gets Kreklow back they will be formidable and could get to 20 wins. If Brown and Clarkson would have stayed and Kreklow would have came back Mizzou would be a top 25 team all season long.

  • *

You overrate Kreklow and the club had 23 wins last year. If Bello, Cam step up and the rest of the team progresses that should be attainable again

-- Posted by Bunk on Fri, May 2, 2014, at 7:50 AM
  • I'm not rating Kreklow at all. He's a serviceable player. A bench player. He's much better than Shane Rector or trying to play J3 or Feldman at the 3 position. It's not about Kreklow. It's about depth.

    PG- Bello/Clark

    SG- Wright/ hopefully Punter

    SF- Beidschied/Kreklow

Post players Gant, J3, Rosburg, Jones, Post

We could get 20-24 wins against a weak SEC

Kim Anderson "We've talked to him, It think we'll try to get with him face-to-face and kind of re-recruit him". I heard they are planning on meeting with him early next week.

I've also heard that Haith is trying to recruit him to Tulsa.

UCLA is also picking up interest in him a bit with Jordan Adams leaving, and since he is from Los Angeles that might be attractive to him as well.

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Fri, May 2, 2014, at 9:10 AM
  • Coach KA meets with Namon Tuesday but Namon has already told UCLA Rivals website that he is going to get out of his LOI regardless of how the meeting goes with KA. Says Mizzou will still be in it but I bet he ends up a Bruin.

I was going to type that Champ. You have good point there Thot but Gant really wants to be play the 3 or at least be stretch 4 so the 2 guard spot looks slim. Look for Mizzou to push hard for another 2 guard in recruiting or as a transfer

That pg from Kansas must really hate his environment to be leaving a blue chip school like that. And he'll have to sit out a year right? If you go from one D1 school to another? I always get confused on how that works

-- Posted by formerposterchild on Fri, May 2, 2014, at 5:56 PM

Also if you do that can you just take your redshirt year that year? I realize your already sitting out a year so it'd kinda be pointless to use it

I just wanted to mention that I hear lots of recruiting news, info on players, coaching news, and other various college basketball items rather than the ones I put on here. Normally I will only put info on here if I think people on this board will be interested in it or it is something major as far as high school or college basketball goes. If you are fan of another team throughout the country, let me know and I will post anything I ever see regarding that team or what that team is doing on the recruiting trail.

@shootsscores It will have to be soon since recruiting overall wraps up in like two weeks.

-- Posted by Bunk on Wed, May 7, 2014, at 1:12 PM
  • *

HSHS that is a great question. To my knowledge there is not a deadline (please anyone correct me if I'm wrong) it is all about getting out of that NLI. That is where the tricky part occurs. I assume the longer said recruit draws out the process the least likely the university is to grant a release from that NLI. The NLI is signed to the University, not to the coach (Even though many fill that should be re-formated and include a coach provision or that you are somehow commiting to both). But many Universities do grant releases in the event of a coaching change. One difference is a current member of a team doesn't have to stay. He has the option to transfer, unlike a signed recruit, who is obligated to playing at least a season at the school whose NLI he signed. A player already at the school can transfer with minimal penalty. Players who transfer from one Division I school to another are forced to sit a year.

As I stated many feel that there should be some type of provision that states "if so and so is the head coach then I'll stay, if he leaves then this is null and void". Some think that only having one signing period would take care of a lot of these problems (I personally like the 2 signing periods). While some believe that you should'nt even be granted realses that if you signed the NLI then you should have to play for that University at least one year.

But the NLI's are a mess. The NCAA office in Indy doesn't even write or deal with them. They have their own seperate commission made up of about 30 universities that handles those. High school players literally need a lawyer just to understand the thing. I would like to see some reform to them.

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Wed, May 7, 2014, at 2:34 PM
  • *

This is all based on the assumption that these Mizzou guys have signed and not just verbally committed. Because a verbal commitment really doesn't mean a hill of beans. I could verbally committ to be Oregon's next QB right now. But I'm just guessing that these Mizzou guys have signed, I don't know for sure. I'm sure one of the Mizzou guys would know.

Hit By a Pitch. You get to take a base afterwards. Cards SS Greg Garcia got hit by a pitch with bases loaded in the 12th of a tied game so the Cards won in walk off fashion only it was a HBP instead of walk off walk, single, or HR.

Its not about just transfers. Its about building a team from transfers and KA has already said he will not rely solely on transfers to build a program. Transfers are good to supplement the talent you already have but as far a building a program goes, well Mizzou is your example of why it doesn't work.

-- Posted by Jolly Dump on Thu, May 15, 2014, at 1:04 PM

When did Haith solely build his team of transfers?

-- Posted by Bunk on Thu, May 15, 2014, at 5:56 PM
  • *

Are you joking Bunk? The past 2 years Haith has relied on at least 8 different transfers to fill the roster. And then half the guys don't even stick around. Good lord, Jeff Gordon just wrote an entire acticle about it 3 days ago.

-- Posted by Jolly Dump on Thu, May 15, 2014, at 6:54 PM
  • *

But he did bring HS talent. Selective memory or are J3, Clark, Jones, Rector all illusions? The transfer thing is made to be way to big a deal and if we are honest stems back to Mike Anderson left the program way more than it does when Haith left it.

-- Posted by Bunk on Thu, May 15, 2014, at 7:19 PM
  • *

Mike Anderson left the program with Talent! Frank Haith has not! The transfer thing is a big deal because it has played into one of the reasons of the apathetic feeling toward the program. Fans will resonate with players who play at the university for several years. The transfers Haith brought in has not. Haith's entire stay at Mizzou has ridden with transfers....stop kidding yourself. Oh but I almost forgot how much you love Frank Haith and defend him at the drop of hat. I forgot that we cannot criticize your beloved Frank Haith. Lets all bow down to the greatness that is Frank Haith.

-- Posted by Jolly Dump on Thu, May 15, 2014, at 7:25 PM
  • *

You never gave the man a chance. Mike left it with it 5 seniors, a freshman in Rosburg, sophomore Pressey, and junior Dixon. No other rotation players and no recruits. Haith had to add transfers in order to be competitive. The revisionist history you are selling is in fact not factual.

-- Posted by Bunk on Thu, May 15, 2014, at 7:30 PM
  • *

And he kept adding transfers! That's the problem. I gave Haith a chance until he proved he couldn't his way out a wet paperbag. You say I never gave the man chance, but you are the one sitting here accepting mediocrity and garbage basketball! His first year was all the proof that he could not coach. If you want to love Haith, that is your choice. The rest of fans who care about the program are glad he is gone.

His first year he won 30 games and secured 5th overall seed in the tournament. Sounds like a loser year to me to Jolly. Point being is the program didn't sag under Haith because of transfers because Haith recruited HS players and got highly rated ones( KA will reap at least one of those benefits in Gant thanks to Tim Fuller) the program sagged( I actually wouldn't call it that because it was a team that under performed on conference play and missed the dance by 2 wins) because he couldn't the team to play lockdown defense on a majority of possessions.

-- Posted by Bunk on Fri, May 16, 2014, at 1:17 AM
  • or run an offense

    or keep a HS recruit

or bring in a HS post player that could score with his back to the basket

or when he got the 2 seed after winning 30 games planning out a winning formula to take down Goliath (Norfolk St)

-- Posted by gettinweird on Fri, May 16, 2014, at 6:56 AM
  • *

The fact you touting Haith got highly regarded recruits but the team under-performed should be your proof that the man stunk as a head coach but your blind love is preventing that. Haith lost the fans when his 2 seed tanked to Norfolk and then the next year (again) under-performed. During that same year Phil Pressy actually regressed as a player.

Yes, that's the HC I want to lead my favorite team. A coach who can't an offense, who can't still defense to his players, who couldn't keep his own recruits from transferring, who relied heavily (at least 8) on transfers, and ....oh why even bother with you? You're so in love with Frank Haith you would marry the man even after finding out he would destroy you.

-- Posted by Jolly Dump on Fri, May 16, 2014, at 7:42 AM
  • Haith never had a chance when it took all of 2 seconds after signing his contract to bring his NCAA investigation to MIZZOU. It would be interesting to know the story how that could happen. Was Alden duped or stupid either way Haith never had a chance and made Alden look bad their relationship was shot from the get go

Maybe they weren't irrational about hating the man because of his Miami years which is something this fanbase was never going to do.

Anyway let's table the argument for later there is important news afoot. Namon Wright has allegedly recommitted to Mizzou. If this is true than it's a big get for KA because Namon did not have any immediate Fuller ties. Also it would be great if we can get him and 4 star PG Shelton Mitchell who is supposed to be visiting this weekend

-- Posted by Bunk on Fri, May 16, 2014, at 10:47 AM
  • Great news Bunk!! Glad to hear that! I was also wondering if u'd ever heard why Fuller didnt follow him to Tulsa? Did Haith want him to? If Fuller turned him down that might say something about how things really were here at the end of his tenure.

Fuller is a free agent in the sense of he is not tied to a coach like a lot of assistants are. He has A LOT of connections in basketball due to Nike so he just sorta goes where he wants to. He was at Louisville but left after a disagreement with Pitino over little Pitino jumping the other two assistants in salary and responsibility. Fuller clearly sees something at Mizzou that will make a viable head coaching candidate. I could speculate as to what that is be it would be totally speculation.

-- Posted by Bunk on Fri, May 16, 2014, at 12:23 PM
  • if KA lands Mitchell he will have essentially recruited a 4 star PG, 4 star SG, 3 star SF, 4 star PF and kept every player on the roster at Mizzou. I'd say a heck of a start.

It's becoming more and more apparent that 2015 players Diamond Stone and Malik Newman will be a package deal in college. Newman is the #1 player in the class (in my opinion he is #1 in high school, regardless of class including the college incoming 2014 class), and Stone is #5. They would be an awesome duo for whoever lands them.

Shelton Mitchell said he will decide by the end of the week. Looks like it's down between Mizzou and Vandy, with N.C. State trying to slide in.

Mitchel, for some unknown reason, chose Vandy over Mizzou and Ahmaad Rorie, a 6-foot point guard from Tacoma, WA chose Oregon over Mizzou. Ricky Kreklow picked Creighton to finish his journeyman career. Now Mizzou has focused on Tramaine Isabell, a 6-1 three-star prospect point guard from Seattle, WA. Mizzou still has 2 open scholarships open.

-- Posted by Jolly Dump on Tue, May 27, 2014, at 12:28 PM
  • I can see choosing Oregon just because they get and have top notch everything but I'm surprised Mitchel chose Vandy. Didn't really care where Kreklow ended up anyway.

One of the top players in the nation Allonzo Trier announced today that he will be transfering and spending his senior year at Findlay Prep. He is considered to be around the 20-25 player in the nation, and depending on if you rank him as a PG or SG he is in the 2-4 range in his position. He had an OUTSTANDING AAU season, so I bet he jumps in the rankings next time they are updated. I would expect to see him in the top 10-15 when it's all said and done. I have talked with Trier a couple times, seems like a good down to earth kid. And thats what happens when you have a good AAU season, you get to transfer to Findlay Prep!

Yeah I guess we know why Maker and his brother are all of a sudden visiting Mizzou this weekend. It is either genius or extremely shortsighted and it won't be until like 3 years from now until we will know the answer.

Also it appears the Fulford hire makes Mizzou the favorite for another Hunnington Prep star in Montaque Gil-Caesar the number 22 overall player in 2015.

-- Posted by Bunk on Tue, Jun 24, 2014, at 8:10 AM
  • *

Looks like Gil-Caesar is trying to reclassify for 2014 which would officially make this class insane.

Also OH MY how many studs are at Hunnington Prep? You got Gil-Caesar, the Maker brothers, Thomas Bryant, and Miles Brooks( I think that's his name anyway). Seriously if Fulford can land his studs then you could conceivably hope that Loos STL connections and Fuller's Nike connections could make Jayson Tatum think long and hard about Mizzou. Of course you get Tatum than Giles is all of sudden seriously interested. This hire may have been underrated by me last night.

-- Posted by Bunk on Tue, Jun 24, 2014, at 9:17 AM
  • *

Yeah it's a big hire, that's why I was freaking out haha. Yeah UK has been a big favorite with Teki, and he has been talking about reclassifying for months now to the 2014 class, but I don't see him doing it, I think he will stay in the 2015 class. But you think Mizzou would be in the running for him now, he's a good player! Bryant is good, the Miles kid is Miles Bridges, and he's really good too. Bridges is probably my favorite out of Fulford's current guys. Hey anyone that can get Wiggins to come and play for you has to be doing something right!

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Tue, Jun 24, 2014, at 9:46 AM

Not just Wiggins but 5 stars galore and high ranked 4 stars.

-- Posted by Bunk on Tue, Jun 24, 2014, at 10:04 AM
  • *

Oh yeah he's been running a 5 and 4 star factory that's for sure.

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Tue, Jun 24, 2014, at 10:52 AM
  • *

So what's say that Mizzou has a realistic shot at half of his guys from Prep. That's nice but I want to know what his connections are that gets these kids to Prep? Do you know Buck? It is those connections that will ensure his success as a college recruiter.

-- Posted by Bunk on Tue, Jun 24, 2014, at 11:01 AM
  • *

That's a great question. I know that he had really good relationships with these families that house the kids. Many of these kids as you know don't live in WV, they actually live with families that host them. And many of these families host multiple kids throughout the years. Take Teki Gill-Ceasar for example. I think his family also hosted current Minnesota Timberwolf Gorgui Dieng. So I know he is in good with these pick host families. He also has really good AAU connections, and it out recruiting (because it's legal for him) at many AAU events. I would say the area he lacks is the high school coach relationship. As you can imagine that don't like him the most, because these "Prep schools" take away there best players. He will need to get better in this, but on another note these host families and AAU teams are where the high profile guys are, and many scholarships get offered during AAU time. So I think the good outweighs the bad. Most of his guys though come from recruiting at AAU events.

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Tue, Jun 24, 2014, at 12:08 PM
  • *

And AAU coaches like him because they can say hey we sent guys to Huntington Prep, and Findlay Prep, and Monteverde Academy so you should come play for my AAU team.

Incoming UK freshman Trey Lyles had a small medical procedure done on his left leg today. He will not play with the team for their exhibition games in the Bahamas this summer. WCS will also not play with the team in the Bahamas. Cal said that both could play if they wanted to, but they are going to be precautionary and sit both out so that they are 100% when practice starts. This will provide a great learning opportunity and training time for Dakari, Poythress, Towns, Lee, and Willis. It will be interesting to see which one of them really steps up.

I love how Mizzou is all of sudden in play for these guys that Buck post about visiting UK. No offense Buck but I usually right them off because there is no way it would have been relevant to Mizzou until now.

I was thinking about the Teki visit coming up and if Mizzou lands him and he is reclassified to 2014 it's like the Devin Booker thing never happened. Basically it would have been a realization of Mizzou's recruiting goals this offseason which is a little astounding.

He was 6-11 from the field and 7-7 on free throws, for a game high 19 points, 4stls, 3 asts, 2 rbds, 1blk, with a big dunk to start the game and a highlight And-1 play that will probably make Sportscenter Top-10.

Yeah I have no idea what he is going to do. I was thinking he will go back to the Heat for a while, and kind of dismissed off the Cav rumors. But they just cleared off a crap load of cap room today!! They can say that were going to do that regardless, but I'm not buying that. Seems like they might have something in the works. We will prolly know more in the next 24 hours. My prediction right now is Lebron goes back to Cleveland and signs a 1 or 2 year contract (i'm leaning towards 1).

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Fri, Jul 11, 2014, at 1:51 PM
  • *

Well they aren't trading for Jeremy Lin. They are trading for Jeremy Lin's expiring contract that pulls their cap up to the cap floor.

I love how Morey built the Rockets with a gamble and trickery with the "poison pill" contract for Asik and Lin. Morey knew if they didn't gel that despite the poison pill blowing up the contracts that he could flatten the cap hit by trading away these expiring deals with a 4 year option that paid nothing. It's nutty how he pulled this trick with putting Parsons on the market a year early and use the bird rights for him to completely negate the cap hit making signing a max level player possible. IT IS JUST SO IMPRESSIVE

-- Posted by Bunk on Fri, Jul 11, 2014, at 1:58 PM

Yep your spot on! Pretty dang impressive.

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Fri, Jul 11, 2014, at 2:02 PM

Like most GMs would have that have two stars( 1 at the max and 1 very close to it) and some overpaid pieces and lots of 2nd round pick players and just 2nd round picks would frantically worry about how lock up it's 3rd and 4th best player.

Morey risked his third best player in restricted FA in order to get another star that fits the style of play you want and ended up removing the overpaid fat that didn't fit the scheme. Plus he gets his third best player back anyway because planning ahead and contingencies always pay off. Calculated risks will always equal rewards and more opportunities.

I think they'll still be okay, but I don't think they'll be better than the Cavs. East is pretty wide open. My bold prediction is Cavs vs. Wizards for Eastern Conference Finals.

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Mon, Jul 14, 2014, at 8:17 AM

I think it will end up being a Chicago, Cleveland, Indiana, Washington 1234 in the East. Toronto and Brooklyn both look like they have legitimate shots now that Miami is weakened. The East will come down to Rose's health and Lebron's supporting cast as usual I think. There is an interesting nugget this time around in the form of Beal and Wall taking that next step and Otto living up to his draft slot.

Last two summer games Otto has done really well!

Otto has been hurt so he is already seen as a bust unfairly. When he did play he seemed pretty good or at least average. The vets like him because he works hard had you see that when he gets on the court and is in position for passes from Old Man Andre Miller.

If Otto can be the 5th best player on this team and replace Ariza's production at the 3 spot than the Wizards can get to Finals with a couple of breaks. Otto just needs to focus on hitting his shots when they come to him and do what he does best which is making smart passes/decisions with ball and not turning it over.

UK had a really busy weekend recruiting. They extended 4 scholarships this weekend.

First was to No.1 player in the 2015 Class, Diamond Stone. He is the other part of the package deal with Malik Newman.

Second was small forward Brandon Ingram No.12 in 2015.

Third was power forward Henry Ellenson the No.7 player in 2015.

Finally SG Antonio Blakeney, the No.20 player in 2015.

Kentucky has now offered 13 players from the 2015 class (Including Charles Matthews who is already committed to UK) and 7 from the class of 2016. 20 scholarships out there is the most I can ever remember for Coach Cal having. Don't know whats changes, but I've never seen them offer that many scholarships. But I do really like these two classes coming up, they have loads of talented players!

  • The Cavs. aren't going to be that great Wiggins hasn't even played and I know he has a lot of potential but he didn't impress at Kansas and Kyrie is a really good point guard but he needs to be able to play without the ball in his hands and get a jump shot cause his shot sucks. Now if they could get Love that would help a lot and put them toward the top of the East but really if they don't get him there not going to do anything.

With Melo signing his contract today, and we know the details of LBJ's contract, Chris Ocean, I mean Chris Bosh will be the highest paid player in the league next year. Biggest heist in NBA history lol. But I like Bosh, good for him, he got PAID.

Ciri I would just be cool because it is coming Mizzou's way very soon. Thanks to Fuller and Fulford Mizzou is somehow in on like 6 PF/C that 6'11 or taller and are 4-5 stars per rivals over the 2015 and 2016 classes. Of course we won't land all of them but Mizzou is a serious player in the dance for players.

It is worth a ton of money. The income will really be able to allow all SEC schools a chance making true separation from the rest of the country in the sports they choose to spend it on. Currently it appears that only UK and Mizzou are going invest some that money in basketball.

hahaha it does seem like that sometimes doesn't lol!! Well a little bit of why it seems like that is because you have to remember that we practically start over with a new team every year (this year excluded). When you lose have you team every year I guess you have a lot of scholarships to give out haha! Also we very rarely have any seniors. And if we do have any, they are ususally walk ons. This year we only have 4 recruits coming in mostly due to the fact that we get more back than we ever have. This next year I think Cal is giving out a lot of scholarships because he knows we will be losing Juniors, Sophomores, and freshman to the draft in 2015. 14-15 season could be another one of those lose eveyone years, I hope not though!

I'm really excited that Mizzou is doing well and getting in the mix for some of these high profile guys! I hope UK and Mizzou can dominate the SEC

Yeah that SEC network contract is huge (bigger than Chris Bosh money lol). If DirectTV doesn't pick up the SEC Network, someone will be getting a strongly worded letter, or strongly painted picture or something from me haha.

WOAH WOW this is BIG news!! The nations No. 1 high school guard, and my favorite player in high school basketball, 2014 SMU commit Emmanuel Mudiay will hire his own agent and play overseas instead of going to SMU! I am shocked. This was SMU's whole game plan, and they were really going to be a force this year. He was a favorite to go to UK at one point before choosing SMU. I had not even heard a rumor that this was a possiblity. I feel bad for Larry Brown too. But it is official and Brown issued a statement saying that it is not an academic issue but a hardship issue. From what I've heard no one believes that it wasn't an academic issue. It looks like SMU might come under some NCAA scrutiny had he stayed. Man I've always known that that Prime Prep Academy was shady (shady even on a prep academy level). I wouldn't touch a recruit from that school. The Chinese Basketball Association seems to be the front runner to land him.

Yeah I actually heard that rumor a couple weeks ago when I was in Memphis that they might hire him as a coach. It was on their local news there. I guess now its official! I have actually seen the 2019 class one Chandler Lawson play (I have family in Memphis and that is how I've seen him) and he seems like he will be the real deal. He just towers over all the over kids, and you can tell he has a high basketball IQ.

I'm not mad about it, but that doesn't mean I like that practice very much. I'm a Pastner fan, I don't have a problem with him. But I would like you to point out all of these shady hires and shady recruiting tactics that Cal has done!?

  • Just off the top of my head without doing research:

Back in 2000, he hired Dejuan Wagner's dad to be director of operations at Memphis, so Dejuan would sign there and he did.

He still heavily recruited and played Derrick Rose when everyone in the country knew he hadn't and couldn't pass his SAT or ACT whichever it was. Worked out well for Memphis in the end (vacated season)

Yeah you guys may be right. While I think if the Cavs get Love they could probably take the Thunder or the Clippers, I'm not sure they could take the Spurs just yet. And I think they know that. LeBron elluded in his letter that it would take more than one year for them to be sussesful. I think the Clippers find the next gear this year and make it to the Western Conference Finals.

UK commit Charles Matthews and Stephen Zimmerman are trying to get Ivan Rabb to attend Big Blue Madness with them. He said he would most likely be there.

Also it looks like the Warriors are now open to including Klay Thompson on a Kevin Love trade where originally that wasn't an option.

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Fri, Jul 18, 2014, at 10:15 AM
  • If Cleveland gets Kevin love they certainly can contend for an nba title. Kevin love and Kylie Irving will be MUCH better next year than Wade and bosh were this year. Kevin love is gonna be deadly if matched up with Lebron with his shooting rename. He's gonna present a big time matchup issue for the opposition if aired with Lebron.

As for the spurs they will probably fall short next year base on the fact that the western conference is so freaking tough combined with the fact they've won it two consecutive years.

i realize this is not about MLB but I figured that sense we have changed the topic a couple of times, then why not. What's everybody's take on the Astros and their failure to sign 1st Rounder Brady Aiken and 5th Rounder Jacob Nix?

They had originally offered $6.5million signing bonus to Aiken (who was slotted for $7.9mil) but then ran an MRI on his elbow and lowered the offer to $3mil. Then they proceeded to raise the offer 3 more times until it reached $5mil but that point Aiken would not even talk to GM Luhnow. Failure to sign Aiken meant that Houston lost the $7.9mil allotted money for a 1st overall so Houston then could not sign Jacob Nix to a agreed upon $1.5mil signing bonus because they no longer had the money to do so.

    Thoughts?

-- Posted by Jolly Dump on Mon, Jul 21, 2014, at 4:06 PM
  • *

It happens when you play hard ball with a kid you think you can sign under slot. You draft that kid #1 thinking he is underslot and then you draft a bunch of the other kids who are a little too pricey for their slot thinking those savings turn themselves into 3 or 4 more really good potential players. It's smart and worked the past 2 years and has helped boost the Houston farm system drastically but when this happens it's a huge setback. They still get the #2 overall pick next year so they get second chance with two top 7 picks in all likelihood.

-- Posted by Bunk on Mon, Jul 21, 2014, at 4:40 PM
  • *

So what happens with the guy that went #1 overall!? Does he go sign with another team!?

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Mon, Jul 21, 2014, at 4:54 PM
  • *

The way it works is that he now has 3 options: go to an independent minor league organization, go to a JUCO where he can be drafted next summer, or go to a 4-year where he would not be able to enter the draft again until after his Junior year in college. Apparently the kid had a small UCL which Houston said could potentially mean he is more prone to Tommy John.

But now the MLBPA is getting involved because Nix and Aiken both had agreements with Houston but then Luhnow overplayed his hand. If MLBPA files a grievance (which they most likely will) and wins both players could become Free Agents.

Hey thats great! Yeah UK made the top 7 as well. We just got involved with him a few weeks ago. To be honest, he has been one of the most impressive players in my opinion the last couple of weeks. Espicially at the Lebron camp, they said he did really well. He is one of those players that I've mentioned before that has a good junior year, but nobody really knows him nationally. Then all of a sudden he has a great AAU summer and goes flying up the recruiting board into like the top 15 player in the nation. And to be honest it really wasn't even a whole summer, it was one viral video of him doing one dunk. It's funny how one dunk can pretty much move you up the board like that, because it brings out all these recruiting services to watch you. It's odd, but hey that's how it goes. (Helps that he plays on the same AAU team as the #1 player in nation, everyone sees Blankney as well)

Mizzou has made the Top 9 schools for PG No. 52 in the 2015 Class Jimmy Whitt. Whitt is from Columbia MO, and I believe No.1 in the state in the 2015 class (of course Tatum in No.1 in Missouri, but he is in the 2016 class).

Mizzou would love some combo of Whitt, Maker( if he reclassifies), and Thomas Bryant in 2015 if the scholarships allow. They would also love to move heaven and earth to make room for Blankley if he is serious. Could be a legitimate top 5 in the nation recruiting class next year for Mizzou.

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Wed, Jul 30, 2014, at 7:43 PM

Also have some news on Maker. His handler has come out and that it is unlikely he reclassifies. It's looking like he won't have all of his school credits done in time due to his busy basketball summer, and him not getting enough summer school work in. He also said Thon needs some more time to work on his body. (Frankly that's probably true). This isn't necessarily bad for Mizzou at all, it gives them more time to become involved with him. They could also try really hard for some kind of Mizzou Maker/Tatum package.

Sidenote: it looks like Maker was really impressed with Mudiay route, and would consider that.

2nd sidenote: there were reports that Thon's little brother Malik "baby" Maker was listed as older than Thon on some of his AAU registration.

UK just offered No. 35 in 2015 Class 7 foot center Doral Moore. I'm seeing people from other schools saying well we lost out. And people saying watch for a commitment to UK any day. I don't really know why people are saying that. I know he is taking an official in a couple weeks. He reminds you of Marcus Lee or WCS. He would come in next year and back up Lee. I guess we will see.

Allonzo Trier has committed to Arizona. Everyone sorta saw this one coming, been an Arizona lean for a long time. He's a good scorer. He's one of those score first, pass second point guards. Liable to put up 40 in an AAU game, but not many assists. But good player and size! I've actually talked to Allonzo before, seems like a good kid!

Duke with two could commits now.

And.... DirectTV and SEC Network reach an agreement!!!! I was starting to get nervous.

Boy that first Adidas Nations game was BOOOOR-INNG. Hope UK gets Jaylen Brown, he was the only one that impressed me.

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Mon, Aug 4, 2014, at 8:50 PM
  • Brown was indeed impressive. Watching the next game and Thon Maker as #1 ranked. I was blessed with the opportunity to see both Maker and Jayson Tatum play this summer. At this point I would put Tatum ahead of Maker. Tatum is more complete at this time although Maker could very well have more upside with his height and remarkable agility for his size.

    -- Posted by JacksonTF-1000 on Mon, Aug 4, 2014, at 9:00 PM

Recording the next game, haven't seen it yet. I've seen Tatum play, but not Maker. Have only seen Maker on video. From what I've seen, I would agree with you. I would but Tatum ahead of Maker because he is more complete right now. Both are certainly fun to watch!

Not sure how I feel about this Adidas Nations tournament. These guys have been playing AAU and various events that they travel to since March, and it seems like they are tired and need a rest.

Also I haven't seen a real good knock down shooter in the 2015 class. Seems like they are lacking in that category.

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Mon, Aug 4, 2014, at 9:12 PM
  • Luke Kennard, also a Duke commit, is the knockdown shooter for 2015 class. He can stroke it but has a real nice overall game to go with the shooting. BTW, also a Kentucky fan here so definitely not a Duke fan! Still can't deal with Laetnner.

    -- Posted by JacksonTF-1000 on Mon, Aug 4, 2014, at 9:30 PM
  • Also Ryan Cline from Indiana for a pure shooter. He may be better than Kennard as a jump shooter but doesn't have the ball skills of Kennard.

    -- Posted by JacksonTF-1000 on Mon, Aug 4, 2014, at 9:40 PM
  • *

Yeah I was going to mention Kennard, he's really one of the only ones. There's a big lack. Hey hey that's awesome!! Always good to see a fellow UK fan haha! Oh I still can't deal either haha. I'm okay with UK not getting another shooter for 2015. They will have Devin Booker coming back, and Charles Matthews coming in who's a good SG. If they can snatch Zimmerman off the west coast (which I think they can), and get a good PF (like Ivan Rabb or Caltron Bragg), I'll be pretty satisfied.

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Mon, Aug 4, 2014, at 9:50 PM
  • *

Yep agreed! And I think Malik Newman can get to be a good shooter, he just gets to the rim so easy in high school he doesn't have to be a knock down shooter yet.

Kobi Simmons, 5 star point guard in the 2016 class, will be taking unofficial visits to Kansas, Kentucky, and Mizzou this fall. He is ranked anywhere from No.15 to No.30.

I seriously cannot even keep up with Mizzou Basketball recruiting. A popular Mizzou target from CoMo Jimmy Whitt( I think he is somewhere between 45-52 ranked nationally) set his official visits as he is a 2015 target and Mizzou got one and is the last one. Whitt had been leaning elsewhere until recently and it looks like he will probably stick with the hometown team when he does announce.

ESPN has corrected themselves, Hammon will be the second woman assistant coach. Lisa Boyer was assitant coach with the Cavs in the 01-02 season. You would think they could get that stuff right.

  • Ok im all for equal rights and all that but someone enlighten me and tell me the benefit of having a female asst in the NBA? I cant come up with a good reason to have one, other than appeasement. But im not aware of much of a backlash from the nba NOT having female assistants.

    -- Posted by cirithungol17 on Tue, Aug 5, 2014, at 1:50 PM

It doesn't matter who the assistant is as long as they are the best. That's the point. If she really is the best assistant available than hire her over the next best male candidate.

Truthfully if I was going into any business that had particular correlations of gender, race, or ethnicity in its workforce than I would immediately starting seriously looking into those minority representation pools for new workers. Not because one race/ gender etc. is better than another but because that is a big NEON SIGN SAYING MARKET INEFFICIENCY. Always hire the best and you will be surprised what will happen.

-- Posted by heshootshescores on Tue, Aug 5, 2014, at 2:14 PM

    -- Posted by cirithungol17 on Wed, Aug 6, 2014, at 9:39 AM
  • The distraction word is tossed around a lot, but truthfully how big of a distraction is this? The Spurs are one of the most respected organizations in the NBA, with arguably the greatest coach ever in Pop. She worked with them last year and the players seemed to have respected her then. Pop wouldn't hire someone that cause turmoil or an uprising to his team. I just don't believe this is that big of a deal because she was hired because Pop felt she was the best for the job with all things considered. I will say as a Spurs fan and a fan of team first basketball in general, I wish her all the best and really like the hire.

He would be a nice pick up for sure!

So, I was thinking(sometimes that's not good haha). Here is a thought question: I was just noticing that today is pretty slow recruiting wise, which led me to start thinking about the Under Armour event which is the next event in line. Either the players in it were released yesterday, or they will be sometime this weekend. And the Adidas event just concluded. So we've had a Jordan event, Nike event, Adidas event, Under Armour event, Mcdonalds event, team USA events( or international if you came from another country), and then a slew of AAU events, and all these shoe companies have thier own AAU events, and sometimes whole circuits. So finally this leads me to my next questions. This summer period is really filled with more events and played over more months than high school ball is. Do you guys think we will start to see players skip high school ball and just play in these summer circuits!? I mean there are more than enough events to get noticed, and often times college coaches make the AAU events more than high school ball because they are coaching their own team during high school ball. We have also see in recent years some of the top players such as Julius Randle and Harry Giles suffer injurines during high school ball that knocked them out for a whole year. It just seems like we are going to come to a breaking point with all these dang summer events, so I was just wondering if you guys thought kids might skip high school ball and just focus on these big tournaments.

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Thu, Aug 7, 2014, at 4:08 PM
  • *

Idk they have find some way to get noticed to get on the AAU teams and that's usually the work of HS coaches or HS boosters making that AAU coach connection. I think we could see a reduced emphasis on HS basketball though. Like a kid who only plays like 15 minutes to protect himself from injury at the expense of winning HS games.

  • Wouldn't be surprised for a spot to open up next year for Mizzou. Especially if they can get Bryant, Whitt, and Blakeney. Someone will suddenly find more playing time somewhere else. Also look out for Ted Kapita, another guy that was recruited to HP by Fulford. Considered a big lean to FL but he went to HP even though Bill D wanted him to stay in a FL high school to keep him under the radar. I like the uptick in recruiting done by this staff. Hope we can start landing them!

Yeah I see 2-4 candidates to transfer next year for spots. Basically Teki, J3, and Gant are the only ones safe. Clark, Jones, and Namon are also likely going to be safe. Transfers might actually go pro early. The spots will be there for the big hitters next year if need be. Also room will DEFINITELY be made for the big guns in 2016.

    Kentucky beats Puerto Rico 74-49!

These incoming freshman understand the game of basketball way better than last years freshman did. Booker's defense is way better than I expected. Didn't really peg him for a big defense guy. Tyler Ullis is going to be a great PG. For 5'8 he is a defensive pest, great passer, and really high bball IQ. Harrison twins have matured so much. No more bad body language, they are now communicating, vocal, and have really taken over as leaders.

Aaron Harrison and Poythress stole the show.

Aa Harrison led team with 15 pts. Poythress chipped in 10 with a bunch of monster dunks. Freshman Karl Towns with 10 pts. 7 rbs.

Keep in mind this game was without WCS and top incoming freshman Trey Lyles.

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Sun, Aug 10, 2014, at 2:02 PM

Kentucky will face off against Champagne Chalon-Reims a team who plays in the French National League Pro A. This is supposed to be one of the best teams UK plays. These are all grown men who have been playing professionally (including NBA gusy) for a while. Cal said before the trip he thought the Cats would go 0-6, so at least they messed that up with their win yesterday.

Cal also announced today that associate coach Kenny Payne will coach today's game. Cal said before the trip that he himself would only coach 1 or 2 games.

Kentucky beats Champagne Chalon-Reims 81-58. A very very impressive win, and to be up 30 at one point against a professional team in the highest division of the French league, thats a really high level opponent for an exhibition game in August. They just look so much more mature and way behond where at lot of Cal teams have been at this point, and he even stated that after the game. They are moving the ball, finishing, playing defense, being very unselfish, smiling and communicating well... in August.

UK went with the same starting line-up as yesterday, Twins, Booker, Dakari and Poythress.

First thought, Tyler Ulis is the MAN! Man is he mature beyond his years, and he sure can play some basketball. I really think by about the 10th game this season we will see the line-up of Ulis and both Twins. Ulis running the point and the Twins playing the wings. I just think that is going to happen. I think Ulis will be a big part of a lot of wins for UK this season. And I think he will be around 4 years which is even better.

Really liked the play of Kark Towns Jr. again today. Karl lead all scorers with 19 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 asts. I mean how many 7 footers can throw a no look bounce pass through 3 defenders!? He is going to be special. It is going to be hard not to play Marcus Lee adn Towns.

Derek Willis and Dom Hawkings looked great as well. And those are UK's 11th and 12th guys.

Cal just sat at the very top of the bleachers for this game haha. Even got up and ran the ESPN camera's for a while, which was pretty comical. Jay Bilas said that that is the highest paid cameraman in the business lol.

    UK scoring:

    Towns 19 pts, 10 rbs

    Poythress 16 pts, 8 rbs

    Johnson 10

    Lee 7

    Hawkins 7

    Ulis 6

An Harrison 5 (know at one point had 4 asts)

    Aa Harrison 5

    Booker 3

    Willis 3

Finally found a box score, here a couple other stats that stood out. Andrew ended with 6 asts, Devin Booker had 4 steals.

I honestly do not think Cal truly believed his team would go winless. I think he says things to get at his team.

I agree with you on that Jolly. Although I do think their next few games will be pretty tough.

Yeah they are doing great! Due to the games coming on in the morning, I have recorded them but not watched them. I know they thumped Japan this morning 122-38. Ouch! I believe Missouri's own Jason Tatum has really been showing out, and led today with 19 points. USA will play the China-Italy winner tomorrow at like 5:15 am.

Another notable performance today was by Diamond Stone with 14pts, 11 rebs, and 6 blocks. (Keep in mind that he is part of the supposed package deal with Malik Newman. Newman also played great)

UK leads Puerto Rico 46-26 at the half. This has been a half full of highlight plays, including 7 dunks. Most of them lobs. As Jay Bilas said "I am not sure SportsCenter has enough time for all of these highlights".

Again UK's 12th man Derek Willis has played really good.

Poythress leads the way with 9 pts, 7 rebs. Towns has 8 pts. Willis, Aaron, and Andrew each have 7 pts.

Do they follow thru on the delivery or are they short arming the dunks? I hope for ur sake they are heeding Wooden's Bible of Dunking, lest they develop bad habits and rip ur heart out come tourney time. Just sayin.....

If you go back and read, I mentioned the U17 team playing in the FIBA tournament and how fun it is watching them and nothing about the actual FIBA organization. No. 10 in 2015 class Skal Labissiere just announced he is down to Baylor, Georgetown, Kentucky, Memphis, North Carolina and Tennessee. Complex recruit, could take the Mudiay way (yeah I got rhymes lol) and play oversees.

Also really surprised Ole Miss didn't make the list. They were heavily evolved and seemed to be all in, and everyone thought he was high on them too.

USA U17 beat up China today pretty good with a 113-71 score. UK target and No.5 in 2015 PF Henry Ellenson had a breakout game. He led the team with 21 pts, and 10 rebs. Diamond Stone impressed again with 17 pts, 8 rebs, and 5 blks. Malik Newman is leading team USA in assists.

WOWZERS!! Vanderbilt's Kedren Johnson and Dai-Jon Parker will both transfer, per the school. So that's like practically their whole team! I really thought they would finish 3rd, and MIGHT even push Florida for 2nd. But they are probably more like last place now. Huge blow.

haha That could mean a myriad of things.

USA U17 Team will play Australia for the Championship. So far they have rolled through everyone they have played. Closest game was game #1 during group play...they only beat Greece by 10. But every other game has been by 30+

We now have a real shot! If you can convince a few of these kids you can get to league from our school and have super team that competes for a title and gets massive exposure in the process than you have a dog in the fight. It all comes down to how big Mizzou comes up with guys like Blankley and Bryant the year before. If they land them than it's a signal to the Jayson Tatums and Thon Makers of the world that Mizzou is legit

If they got tatum it could be program changing in my opinion.

UK won their game Saturday agaisnt the pro french team, Poythress had 20 pts I believe. They lost to the Dominican Republic that they've already beaten yesterday by 1 point. I think they were tired from 6 full games in 8 days and just ready to go home haha. Tyler Ullis had his best game of the trip yesterday, and is looking like one of the biggest steals Cal has ever gotten. So overall they went 5-1 on the trip.

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Mon, Aug 18, 2014, at 9:47 AM
  • Nice reporting buck, you can come home now haha!! Just wondering, i havnt heard much about teams playing summer tourneys like this. Im surprised the Big Brother NCAA doesnt frown upon this as an unfair advantage, cuz God knows they want every team to finish .500 in the best interests of parity.

    -- Posted by cirithungol17 on Mon, Aug 18, 2014, at 10:44 AM
  • *

Boy I wish I would have been there haha! That's a great question! The NCAA allows you to be involved in one of these out of the country events (against pro teams) every 4 years. UK played one in Canada in 2010 with the Brandon Knight team. I think you just hear more about Kentucky's because it has had more media coverage (ESPN and first event on SEC network). I know off the top of my head Indiana just got done with one in Canada, and UNC is in the Bahamas right now doing theres, but they aren't televised nor are they against the caliber of teams that UK played against. But they main part is that Big Brother NCAA only allows these like twice a decade haha.

Yeah I would say Arkansas and Mizzou are right there together. I would still but the Zou as the favorite, but Arkansas has been after him for a LONG time.

I think is off to Arky. He just visited there last weekend. Then again he lives in CoMo so that muddies the whole visit thing. I don't think he is Mizzou's top target anymore so this makes landing Blankley and Bryant more imperative.

Woooo I'm actually excited for UK football! This is fun! UK leads UT-Martin 35-0 at the half. UK has only scored 35 points in a FULL GAME 3 times in the two years. This is the first game for our good recruiting class. The freshman are doing awesome! Around 11 true freshman have played 6 on offense and 5 on defense. Freshman Wildcats have 14 carries for 171 yards and 4 touchdowns. Freshman wide receivers have 7 catches 118 yards and a touchdown. So all the touchdowns and doing awesome so far!

Really really really surprised that Florida did not make Jayson Tatum's top 10. Not with the way Florida seems to get NBA talent from Chaminade (David Lee, Bradley Beal). Frankly it would have been a bit of a surprise if he didn't go there considering the track record Florida has, but not even the top 10!?!?

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Wed, Sep 3, 2014, at 4:13 PM
  • Who's his type five, Sir Buck?

    -- Posted by cirithungol17 on Wed, Sep 3, 2014, at 4:43 PM
  • *top five

    -- Posted by cirithungol17 on Wed, Sep 3, 2014, at 4:44 PM

Well I don't know about a top 5, but his top 10 is Arizona, Duke, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Mizzou, North Carolina, Saint Louis University, UConn, Wake Forest.

If I had to pick a top 5 I would go with

    Kentucky

    Duke

    Mizzou

    SLU

    Kansas

Complete guess though, though are just the schools that you hear the most about when he is discussed (I know he has already visited Kentucky, last year).
