I concur with those rankings! Just wish Jackson would have pulled a win at Sikeston. Oh well lets see what a bye week does for them!
Brian, why is Helias still ranked in the Top 10 with a 3-3 record? I know they've got a good program, but that still seems odd to me.
They play the toughest schedule in Class 4 with their only losses to Class 4 #3 Harrisonville by one, and Class 6 programs Columbia-Hickman and Columbia-Rock Bridge. Rock Bridge beat them convincingly but they would beat just about any Class 4 school convincingly. Hickman beat Helias by a TD.
Guess you're right Sideline. I checked their schedule after I posted the question and it looks like they've got CBC coming up. We'll see how Helias does in the playoffs.
Oftentimes state rankings are a usual suspects-type list. Helias may only be 3-3, but everybody that knows anything about high school football knows they will be there in the end. They always are. That's why Portageville is finding a tough time getting ranked. They have struggled for so long, people are having a hard time jumping on board. If they were a perennial playoff team then they would currently be ranked, no doubt. Now if Portageville makes a playoff run, reaches the semifinals, and then comes back next year and is 6-0 again, I guarantee you'd find them ranked pretty high.
I am with you semohoops. You see Sikeston,SG,Caruthersville, and Valle ranked a lot. That's because they put out a consistantly good team year after year. These are the best teams in Semo just about every year.
I think Portageville has a good team. Should they be ranked in the Top 10? Not sure yet. They at least deserve a vote, which they got. They will finish the season 9-0 unless NMCC surprises them. We all will know how good they are come the Semi's of Districts and the Finals if they make it that far. Can they do it? Sure! They're style of play works to their advantage because they can keep the other team off the field with their clock control. In order to beat Valle though, they will need to open up that offense a little more and pass it some. I know this from first hand exp. Caruthersville ran the ball better than anyone last year but went against a great team who knew to stack the box and make us pass, which we didn't do. Same applies to Portageville.
