Can someone answer why are conferences still used?

Historic rivalries, makes it easy to schedule games and the reason why it took 43 years to have a playoff system in place like this one -- nobody wanted to get rid of conferences so this is the best solution.

Thanks Brian.

Brian, any chance Jackson gets some love in Class 5 from you, Bonacki, or both this week? They've looked the part of an 8-10 team in the rankings so far.

Maybe, but for most voters the love will come only after a win at Sikeston. The Indians are playing great but a lot of the ranked teams in Class 5 have losses to larger schools or other ranked opponents. Jackson's early-season opponents are a combined 7-9 with half in Class 4.

One has to wonder if AD's will try to take advantage of the point system in upcoming seasons when they schedule opponents.

Dustin,

Personally, I think that is already evident in a couple of instances. However, I don't see too many schools getting away from the traditional conferences with the inherent rivalries they have. When you consider cost of travel these days, I think a "closer to home" approach may become even more prevalent in the future.

Brian,

I think you have a mistake Sikeston's conference standings. We have scored 124 points and only given up 25. You have us down as 117 and 27.

According to MSHSAA, it's 124-27, (27-14, 12-0, 47-7, 38-6)
