Brian Rosener is the keeper of the Semoball Cup which is presented to the school with the most successful season. It is based on a formula that takes into account the combined winning percentage of all sports teams plus bonus points for advancement in postseason play for both teams and individuals. The bonus points are divided by the number of teams a school fields. Rosener has been the sports editor for the Daily American Republic in Poplar Bluff, Mo. since December 2001. He was born and raised in St. Louis, where he attended Lindbergh High School and Webster University. He is married to Jennifer, a Poplar Bluff native, has a son Jack and a dog named Satchel who stands in for his @semoballBrian photo.

SEMO Conference banquet Wednesday

The Poplar Bluff Letter Club's basketball banquet will be Wednesday night at the PBHS Student Center. The event honors the all-conference team and hands out awards, including the boys and girls players of the year.

Also, here's an interesting side note about area basketball: All of the area tournaments around Christmas featured teams that reached the final four.

Scott County Central boys and Notre Dame girls (Cape), Bernie (Bloomfield), Naylor (Twin Rivers) while four of the eight teams at the Poplar Bluff Showdown made deep playoff runs.

Ballard finished second in Kentucky, beating Warren Central in the Sweet 16. The two teams met in the Showdown final with Ballard winning 75-72. At Rupp Arena last week, Ballard again won by 3, 62-59, in the quarterfinal. Ballard then beat the top-ranked team in the semifinal before a loss in the one-class championship game.

Also from the Showdown, Liberty Tech lost in the Tennessee Class AA final. Liberty Tech beat the Mules 53-52 for third place at the Showdown while North Pulaski, which finished last at the Showdown, lost in overtime of the 5A Arkansas state semifinal.
