Brian Rosener is the keeper of the Semoball Cup which is presented to the school with the most successful season. It is based on a formula that takes into account the combined winning percentage of all sports teams plus bonus points for advancement in postseason play for both teams and individuals. The bonus points are divided by the number of teams a school fields. Rosener has been the sports editor for the Daily American Republic in Poplar Bluff, Mo. since December 2001. He was born and raised in St. Louis, where he attended Lindbergh High School and Webster University. He is married to Jennifer, a Poplar Bluff native, has a son Jack and a dog named Satchel who stands in for his @semoballBrian photo.

As requested in a previous entry comment, here's the schedule for the 2008 Poplar Bluff Showdown, which will be played Monday, Dec. 29 to Wednesday, Dec. 31:

Dec. 29

Forrest City, Ark. vs. Liberty Tech (Tenn.), 4 p.m.

Sikeston vs. Warren Central, 5:30 p.m.

Poplar Bluff vs. Green County Tech (Ark.), 7 p.m.

New Madrid County Central vs. Raytown South, 8:30 p.m.

Dec. 30

Semifinals

Dec. 31

Championships, 5:30 p.m.

Third place, 4 p.m.

Fifth place, 2:30 p.m.

Seventh place, 1 p.m.

Raytown South beat Liberty Tech 69-63 for third place last year while Sikeston, which finished fifth, also returns. I'll post more about the teams when it gets closer.

I usually don't start making calls and researching until the week before Christmas, so I'll have more later, but I know Warren Central is from Bowling Green, Ky. and they finished third at the 2006 Showdown. They beat Union City (last year's winner) 90-66 but lost to Forrest City 69-64 in the semifinal after beating Harrison (last year's runner-up) in overtime on the first night. They started five seniors that year but brought five sophomore (now seniors) who were all 6-foot to 6-2.

Forrest City won the 2006 title, beating Vashon 67-47.

If this is a preview to the tournament, I can't wait.
