WaPo columnist's interesting take on Otto Porter

Posted Monday, January 30, 2012, at 5:05 PM

Jason Reid of the Washington Post wrote a pretty flattering column about Scott County Central grad and current Georgetown freshman standout Otto Porter.

I think Reid covered a lot of ground that those in Southeast Missouri have known for a while, namely that Porter is a team-oriented player whose fundamentals are incredibly sound. I remember watching Porter take shot after shot in practice at SCC, and his shot was so fluid. It was a thing of beauty.

But Reid mentioned two things that really caught my eye. First, he mentioned almost in passing something that has been bandied about in these parts. That's Porter playing in the NBA one day. Reid wrote, "Like many standout freshmen at major programs, Porter possesses the physical tools to someday succeed in the NBA. Basketball smarts and maturity set him apart."

The biggest knock I heard about Porter during his high school career was that he was dominating in high school, but he didn't have the body and strength to compete at an elite Division I college. He's proving that wrong every time he takes the court for the Hoyas. He's leading his team in rebounding and he's fourth in scoring.

I've heard a few times the same knock as high school. Sure, he's doing well in college, but he doesn't have the body and strength to compete in the NBA. I think his shot and nose for rebounds will translate well, and apparently others agree.

The second thing in Reid's column that caught me eye was about the competition that Porter played in high school. Reid wrote, "Instead of spending summers touring with AAU teams, Otto Jr. worked on his game while battling his father and uncles. Although Porter faced relatively weak competition in high school, the talent at home pushed him."

There's no doubt basketball games involving Otto's dad, uncles and cousins featured plenty of talent, but what do you think of Reid's assessment of basketball in Southeast Missouri? Sure, there were teams the Braves blew out, but SCC also played some solid teams. The last four years have featured some talented players in Southeast Missouri, plus the Braves traveled to face better competition, including Chicago Simeon last year. The competition isn't at the level of New York City or other major metropolitan cities, but it also isn't a bunch of pushovers taking the court in our neck of the woods. What do you think?

I think it is typical east coast blah blah blah. You aren't on the coast, you can't be as good as us, and it is a fluke that anybody from nowheresville can make it here. Same reason that the Big East is over rated year in and year out.

Hansbrough had his share of doubters as well. Porter is fantastic.

I don't think the writer is doubting him. He's praising him. That's the way I read it.

NBAdraft.net has porter projected as a first round pic in 2013 but I don't think he will leave after 2 years.

The article, the way I read it, praised Otto but trashes the players here in SEMO! Its almost like a backhanded compliment.

Sorry Chem but, as much as it hurts to say it, the Big East isn't over rated.

semohoops -- I agree that it paints Otto in a great light. I think it does a nice job of praising him. I was just bringing up two points that I found especially interesting.

Sorry Kevin. My post was directed to Captain Awesome.

semohoops - I never said the article wasn't positive. Kevin brought up doubters and I was in agreement.

Proud Otto is having success, and hope he has a fantastic career wherever he is, but I put a quarter in the fountain everyday hoping Mizzou plays Georgetown in the tournament every year Otto is there and waxes them. Just for a little poetic home state justice.

I don't see the article trashing players in SEMO, it simply the truth. There just aren't many big time D1 players in this area. Hell the best player in the area (Greg Tucker) is going to a small D1 college in Colorado. And I also have to agree if they played Mizzou I would like to see G'town get powned.

Slick - I can say that I did. I'll root for Mizzou first over everyone else. But if they're not in the picture then I'm behind the locals.

Yes, I once again am very proud of Tyler's success, but have never really rooted for him so to speak. Probably even more so than Otto because I despise Roy Williams with every ounce of my Missouri blood. Ben never really bothered me, I don't think he would have helped Mizzou a lot with the guards they had, and I was glad for him to have the year he did for Notre Dame. As for as NBA careers go, I'm all for them making as much money and achieving as much fame as possible.

I rooted for Tyler over Mizzou anyway but I'm a UNC fan. I root for Georgetown over Mizzou too and actively seek out Georgetown games to watch. I'd much rather see Otto succeed.

Beauty of sports, people choose allegiances to different things. Wouldn't be fun if every body rooted for the same team or players.

Personally I think your reading to much into what was written. The key word in Reid's comment was "Relatively." Meaning not absolutely, but for the most part, which is a valid statement when you look back at the competition that SCC played throughout Otto's Career. When you eliminate the quality teams (about 8 teams per year) that SCC played your left with a pretty weak field. I also think it's a stretch to say that the author was pointing his comments towards SE Missouri basketball. It was more pointed at SCC competition as opposed to the landscape of Southeast Missouri basketball in general. And don't get me wrong, it's not Scott County's fault. They schedule as hard as they can.

I've watched Porter play several times on ESPN, and dick Vital goes nutts for him every time. He raves on and on. quoted his Coach Thompson as saying, "Otto is the most mature and prepared college player he's ever coached" He plays "humble" ball, never hogging the ball or the glory.

Every student needs to learn that lesson.

Hey 7plus1, how bout them 4th or 5th place Big 12 Cyclones STOMPING UConn? Big East = overrated. Until the best of Missouri high school players choose to stay home (examples: Kentucky, Indiana, North Carolina) at Mizzou, it is going to be a battle keeping competitive. Psyco T's senior year at UNC, Mizzou made the Elite 8 which very well could have translated into a Final Four at least. I love Missouri; you couldn't pay me enough to live on the East Coast, which is slowly slipping into Florida..
