Powell on ESPN top plays

Posted Friday, February 3, 2012, at 10:08 AM

The SEMO men's basketball team fell short of its upset bid at Murray State Thursday night but the Redhawks' strong showing on national television netted plenty of positive publicity.

Leading the way during the 81-73 loss was senior forward Leon Powell's monster one-handed follow dunk early in the second half.

Powell's feat was No. 4 on ESPN SportsCenter's top 10 plays for Thursday, the slam compared to NBA star Blake Griffin's monumental jam from earlier in the week.

SEMO's performance, which featured a six-point halftime lead and an 11-point advantage early in the second half, drew positive reviews from the ESPNU broadcast crew that called the game and on the ESPNU college basketball wrapup shows later that night.

I'm sure SEMO fans are disappointed that the Redhawks could not finish off the job, but credit the Racers -- the nation's lone undefeated Division I men's hoop squad ranked ninth and 10th in the two major national polls -- for taking charge in the second half.

Most of all credit sensational junior guard Isaiah Canaan for taking charge in the second half.

Canaan, the likely OVC player of the year, exploded for 16 points over the first nine minutes of the final period and keyed MSU's 24-2 run that turned the game around.

Canaan finished with 32 points despite being held scoreless for the game's first 16 minutes. He hit 6 of 11 3-pointers, many of those from well beyond the arc.

The exciting, well-played game was witnessed by an announced crowd of 8,369 at 8,600-seat CFSB Arena. The noise in the building was deafening at times and the atmosphere was great for the entire contest.

SEMO will get another crack at the Racers when they come to Cape Girardeau on Feb. 15 for what will be the Redhawks' final home game of the season.

You know the Racers will bring loads of fans to the Show Me Center that night and it will be up to SEMO supporters to make sure the game doesn't seem like an MSU home contest.

Murray better hope that the same refs who called the Autin Peay game aren't providing the "home-cooked meal" for them. Laughable third-tier officiating-which, although bad in general, really hurt the Gov's more. Nothing like a 'home-cooked meal' eh?

I don't think the officials had much to do with the outcome. Cannon went off and that really was when the game turned. But I do agree there were some really awful calls made during the game that went against SEMO.

SEMO lost because they got scared. The crowd got a little loud and the boys in red ducked out. SEMO stopped rebounding and stopped playing D. How in the world do you give so much space do a deadly shooter like Cannan. Someone should have been connected to his hip....brutal. Lucas Nutt playing D-1 basketball is a travesty.

Did you even watch the game sports? Maybe the fact that they played pretty much with 6 guys most of the game because of awful calls could be why they "stopped playing d". Pretty obvious to me that fatigue was setting in. They played their butts off and went cold. There is a thing called momentum and that crowd was nuts. If they have nick when they play at home that will add some much needed depth and maybe We won't get as many bs foul calls. Give them a break for losing to the number 9 team in the country on their home floor with awful officiating and probably the loudest crowd they've ever played in front of.

You know, for everyone expecting SEMO to get blown out of the gym, the 8-point loss is **** near a win in itself. Just remember, it was Leon Powell that made SportsCenter top plays, not Ike Canaan

I just don't understand why everyone wants them to fail. It doesn't make sense.

I thought Thursday's game at Murray was a GREAT college BBall game. Sure we fell short, but we gave the Racers quite the scare. I can't wait for the re-match in Cape and I'll call for a SEMO win, which will hopefully be Murray's 1st loss.

I just don't understand why we like to place the blame on the officials. Sure there were some questionable calls, but there are in EVERY game.

We didn't lose the game because of the officials.....we lost because we couldn't stop Canaan. It's that simple.

"I just don't understand why everyone wants them to fail. It doesn't make sense."

That's because they aren't Semo fans, most are just people. If you want to see what actual Semo fans think about the games, you need to go to semofans.com and read what they are saying. I like both sites for Semo-related stuff, this one and the semofans one.

First of all I am a SEMO fan, my brother played basketball for SEMO. I just don't look at things with blinders on. SEMO played good during the first half and was a no show in the 2nd half. The refs played no part in the outcome.

@7plus: Murray is ranked #9 only because they are 20-0. Don't get me wrong that is a great record but who have they played??? The OVC is awful this year. Murray's S.O.S is #270.
