SEMO wins exhibition openerPosted Friday, November 6, 2009, at 12:20 AM
It's tough to read too much into an exhibition game, but SEMO certainly had plenty of rough spots during Thursday's 75-67 win over NAIA Harris-Stowe.
I didn't expect to see a masterful performance considering the Redhawks have just four returning players, are under a new coaching staff and still lack the necessary talent to be a strong Division I team. The Redhawks are a work in progress and will likely remain that way for the entire season. Let's face it, unless something miraculous happens, it's going to be another rough campaign. You don't just turn around in one year last season's 3-27 debacle that featured an 0-18 OVC record and a 19-game losing streak to end the campaign. But I like the way the Redhawks are getting after things and trying to play defense, which has been first-year coach Dickey Nutt's big emphasis from day one. I also love Nutt's attitude and enthusiasm -- along with that of his assistant coaches -- which has rubbed off on his players. The bottom line is, don't even begin to judge what kind of job Nutt will do at SEMO based on this season. Maybe the Redhawks will exceed expectations -- as low as they are -- or maybe they won't. Just don't put too much stock, good or bad, into what happens this year. All that being said, I liked the way freshman guards Derek Thompson and Marland Smith shot the ball. They came to SEMO with that kind of reputation. I liked the way juco transfer point guard Anthony Allison ran the team and penetrated. If I had to bet, I'd say Allison will wind up being SEMO's best all-around player this season. I liked the energy former D-II forward Cameron Butler brought. I've seen that in practices and scrimmages. Senior center Israel Kirk looks like he's improved a lot after he played through injury most of last year. SEMO was also missing several players who have nagging injuries. It should help when they return. So, what did people who attended the exhibition opener think? Marty, I agree that we can't judge how Nutt's staff will do based on this season's win-loss record. We can judge the future, I think, based on effort & discipline. It is going to be a long year I think, record wise. But the team played really hard last night. The defensive execution wasn't great, but the effort was huge compared to the last three years or so. And while we don't have any "immediate impact" freshmen, I think all the freshmen have the ability to have pretty solid OVC careers, as long as they aren't asked to be the primary weapons all four years (hopefully better help is on the way). Anyway, I am fairly encouraged. But we're going to have to be very patient when it comes to the Ws and Ls. VERY PATIENT.
We know Banks and Nutt had back issues and were in street clothes. Nutt could barely walk, I felt bad for him. Why did Russell and Hill dress but not play? Were they also injured?
Anyone notice during shoot-around before the game Shafer on the baseline watching Semo shoot and yes I know he has been on the sideline for football games this year. It was just nice to see him taking a really close interest.
Marland Smith played 34 minutes. Nutt must think a lot of him.
Both Russell and Hill had nagging injuries that Nutt just didn't want to take a chance on them tweaking in a exhibition game. What we have this year is a group of GREAT kids who are hard workers and your blue collar type of players. You don't have to worry about this team giving less than 100% effort. What we lack is 1 or 2 impact players like most good teams have. You add that to the mix and you start to have a team that can start piling up some wins. This is a solid freshman class with Marlin Smith and Derek Thompson having a chance to become very good players.
We had a team that had hit rock bottom. I think Nutt has done an outstanding job of laying the foundation to get this program back on track. Next year we get back a impact player in Leon Powell. If we can just sign 1 more impact player this year then I believe we are headed back to the top of the OVC.
I really like the way coach Nutt runs his practices (not that he cares what I think) LOL. High energy all the time. I've never heard so many yes sirs or no sirs in my life from a group of basketball players. These are the kind of players everyone wants. Great kids and good students. No matter the W's and L's, if you can't get behind this team and come out and support them then...........I'm sorry but your just not a SEMO fan.
I was very impressed.... As far as fundamentals on defense - I have not seen a SE team in a long time display such good fundamentals..I'm not saying they are the best defensive SE team - just basic fundamental..Great Job by Nutt....
Everytime a SE player went out on a player - they had their hands in the air and was closing out....not only that - but they immediately got thier spacing on the ball handler and went into the defensive position....I watch SIU practice several times a year....they reminded me of the way SIU practices on defense...
Help & Recovery was great...I thought the team really got into the passing lanes and played denied defense...
We have to rebound better...bottom line...We did not do well on the offensive boards...I can care less about winning the rebound battle with Harris-Stowe...We can not afford to only get one shot....We have to be able to get two to three shots a possession to be able to win games...A good sign - they blocked-out rather well...the problem is getting position...when on offense or defense (especially offense) if that ball is shot - your hands should be in the air and your FEET SHOULD BE MOVING.....I think they can get that together........
I really like the freshman class....Our big men were kicking the ball out too much in the first half...they have to take it to the hoop and force the foul...especially Butler....I think this kid can get 15 points a game... He needs to use his drop-step more on the low blocks... I really like Kirk - always have...I think he will become more of a presence on the boards as the season goes......
I was really impressed with Nutt and his overall game plan....I sure wish that he had more talent....let by-gones be by-gones....but sure wish he would have came three years ago instead of Edgar...I really thought Edgar had some talent his first year....he was such a poor coach that it didn't matter.....I like Nutt.....maybe he will end up proving my thoughts on hiring him wrong....I sure hope so...
THS (aka PC): I'd like to get your opinion. I'm sure you were there taking pictures.
OK, now that the lunatic left of semoball has spoken is there anyone that actually knows what they are talking about that cares to break things down for us out-of-towners?
I was really impressed with the effort last night especially on the defensive side of the ball. Too many times last couple seasons the Redhawks just didn't look like they cared on either side of the ball. Last night that group of players got after it. Was it the prettiest result ever? Hell no! But Rome wasn't built in a day either.
The three freshmen were recruited when it was just Coach Nutt and Coach Case, right? The freshmen were fairly impressive. They're going to be overmatched most of this season - don't get me wrong. But I think the three freshmen have fairly good futures.
Wasn't there, so can't really say, but how is giving up 67 points, to Harris Stowe, great fundamental defense? That being said, hats off to Coach Nutt on getting his first "victory" with the Redhawks, even if the game doesn't count. Seems to me that getting a win right now is far more important then how you get there. Sounds like there was some clutch FT shooting down the stretch; that is always important.
bam-bam
What do you want to know? By the way I'm waaaay to the right, not left.
What's important is the coaching staff is laying the foundation for the future. The defense last night was better than any of our teams in the last 3 years. However there are still plenty of rough spots to be ironed out. The team isn't close to where coach Nutt wants them to be on defense yet. We have 11 new players and this was only the first game. This team will be much better defensively in January than they are now.
semosupporter - wasn't talking about you, lol. I appreciate you breaking down the game, but most of your first post was just talking about Nutt in general, not last night's game.
How did we look against man-to-man and against zone (if Harris-Stowe played both)?
Did the Freshman guards get beat off the dribble much or did they hold their own?
Did guys step in to the lane to try and draw a charge?
Was their any emotion on the bench (something that seems to have been lacking in recent years)?
Did Harris-Stowe have any inside beef that would give us a good gauge on whether Kirk has improved or was it just who he was playing?
Did it look like Allison will be able to beat OVC defenders with the dribble, can he get his shot off, and what did his 3-pt shot look like?
Can Smith or Thompson run the point at all or are they effectively shooting guards only? Did either show penetration skills?
Miles was billed as a good defender, did he show that? Will he be able to score against OVC competition or is he a defensive specialist type??
Did we press their guards at all in the frontcourt? If so, how did we look at it?
Did Maxwell float around the 3-pt line as he has tended to do in the past or did he stick to being inside?
Will Pearson be able to score against OVC competition? I remember him at Martin and remember thinking he seemed a little slow to be very effective? Did he show more speed than I remember?
Anything else you want to add is cool.
I did'nt get to see the game but did listen to some of it on the Radio. From reading the posts it sounds like a positive step. I guess the biggest thing will be how Coach Nutt will be able to recruit in the future. Any word if either of the Scott County players are interested in SEMO?
semoredhawk,
I said:::

.......................
.....email your buddy (my friend and I refer to furniture....because he is at the games more than the furniture in the place)..anyways - ask his opinion...Did SE show good fundamentals on defense?
Its hard to see fundamentals on the radio or in the newspaper.....I guess if a team gives up points that they should not have.....they have no fundamentals.....lol
bam-bam,
tickets are around $8.00.......I would love to hear all your expertise and breakdown of the game.....

I moved to Greensboro, NC this past summer. If I had seen the game I wouldn't have asked for someone else to break things down for me.
First off let me say our offense is behind our defense. Remember, we had to start from scratch and Nutt believes is defense first. I thought our offense struggled against the man to man to get open looks. Most all of our 3 pt shots came against the zone. The freshman guards pretty much held their own. Every now and then one got beat off the dribble but our help defense was really pretty good. As for drawing charges. Every player on this team would take a bullet if the coaching staff ask them too.
This team shows emotion on the floor and the bench.
Harris-Stowe didn't really have any "inside beef".
Allison and Pearson are both penetraters and should get to the foul line alot. Both are good FT shooters.
Smith can play the 1 or 2 position. Thompson more of just a shooting guard. Both can penetrate but I think Smith is just a little quicker than Thompson at this point. Thompson is the type that once he hits a couple shots in a row look out. He could really go off. These two along with LaQuentin Miles are going to be very good players for us in the future.
We didn't get to see as much of LaQuentin as I would have liked. From when I first saw him at practice until today he has improved quite a bit. He's the type of player that will jump in front of a bus to take a charge. I can't really tell yet what will be his main strengths.
We picked up some fullcourt but didn't really press them until they crossed midcourt.
Maxwell stayed within the offense and drifted out only when it was called for.
As far as Pearson scoring against OVC competition. That's the question for everyone not just him. We are a small team this year and that could hurt us. We should improve as the season goes along. Remember they've mainly been working on defense much more than offense. In time I think it will come togeather. Just when is anyones guess.
Remember we are pretty much building this team from scratch. There will be growing pains but I believe the coaching staff has layed a solid foundation to build on and who knows we might just have a pleasent surprise next week when the early signing season starts.
So, do they not have an established offense? What are we doing, other then shooting 18 3pt shots, just curious. Same as Edgar, Triangle like Garner, Motion like Knight. Princeton style?
As far as the D, did we play straight up man-man, did we play any zone? Did he mix up his D?

Bam-bam's comment went right over your head, but ok.
Bam-Bam - Harris Stowe bball = Quincy fball. It was impossible to tell anything, other than the fact that the effort was there. Nutt will be tested this year. Can he get these kids to keep working hard and keep developing when the Ls start piling up, that's the question. I honestly don't see, after last night, how we're going to score against division 1 teams.
I also think Pearson is a little slow. Great effort though, and hopefully he proves me wrong. Allison would be a darn good OVC PG if he were in a situation where he had to shoot and score so much. Honestly, they were what Nutt has been saying that they will be. Great kids, great effort. . . but not ready yet.
Roth. You are a funny gay. You should come down and see a game yourself and write one of your expert opinions and take pictures (whatever that means...I'm assuming pictures of the men's basketball team in the locker room just like the ones you take of Bekham in the Wizards locker room).
But back to business. I missed the game and was hoping it would be webcasted but I guess they don't do exhibition games. So thanks for the incite on the game (from everyone besides Roth...I'm sude he never played basketball in his life thus has no idea what to talk about). I'm going to try to come up for the WBB exhibition and the men's last exhiibition to see for myself.
THS (PC): You tell a great story. How long did it take you to come up with that one?
Roth, why the man crush on the asst SID?
Semoredhawk: PC called me out, so I'd called him out. He never thought his identity would ever be revealed. And I don't care if people know who I am or not. I'm just as big a SEMO fan as the rest of us. I just can't make it in for all of the games like I used to. Living in KC makes it tough on the commute.
The SE web page says the campus lost power, anyone have any info on that?
semoredhawk, the power went out on campus with about 1 minute left in the football game. The scoreboard went out and it wasn't realized by most until the game had ended that everything was out. Something happened at the power plant on campus. The volleyball game has been pushed back until tomorrow at 11 hopefully. The Cape Fire Department came out and set up some lights in the FieldHouse so that JSU could shower and pack up their stuff..
Wow. How symbolic is that?
That darn power plant.
Blew a transformer, or something like that. I'm no electrician but it seems like a big deal.
For basketball fans, the first OVC mens team to play will be Murray on Monday @ 10pm. The game is on ESPNU also!!
I think 10pm is eastern time.
RCIR's post reminds me of the 'Exclamation Point' Seinfeld episode. Is the fact that Murray plays on ESPNU really worth an exclamation point, let alone two of them? Particularly when posted on what is basically a Missouri high school website?
Here's some interesting news for you that have been critical of the Coach White his playing calling, I was told yesterday that we will have a NEW Offensive Coordinator next season. I suppose nothing is official until it happens, but I look for something to happen after the season.
This same person also told me that they would definitely NOT buy out Samuel's remaining year because the money simply isn't there.....unless the Booster Club raises the money to do it. But...that doesn't mean Samuel won't leave on his own. I'm sure he has connections to major schools where he could make as much money as a coordinator or whatever.
gomer: Are you making fun of me?
Does it really matter if they buy out Samuel at this point or not?
Murray - Cal. I'll probably sneak a peak at it. Why not. As long as Cal kicks the snot out of them..
semoredhawk: Well regardless if we go 2-9 or 1-10, he gets to finish out his 5-year contract. However, what if....just what it we happen to pull off some upsets next year and go 5-6 or 6-5. Then will Samuel get an extension? To me, anything less than 7 wins and there's NO extension.
Roth, what about this..

Tuesday: Coaches Quick Hits
Henderson State: FootballScoop has just learned that defensive coordinator Robert Henry has left the program, effective immediately. We had heard late last night that a possible change could occur on the defensive side at Henderson State. Henry was in his 5th season as defensive coordinator.
Southeast Missouri State and Murray State: We continue to hear that changes are likely at SEMO and Murray State. We hear it's likely that new SEMO athletic director, John Shafer, will try to revitalize the football program. One of our sources tells us that a big Murray State booster has started to feel out potential candidates in case the Racers do not have a turnaround in the next few weeks.
Do we expect any men's basketball signings during the early signing period that starts this week?
Where do websites like footballscoop.com get their info from?
right over my head.....good
..............
Go C'Ville....big game tonight
My info came from a B.O.R. member.
Does the BOR member know that Samuel's K only requires a 50% buyout.
http://semoball.com/files/samuel-marlon....
semoredhawk: Who knows? I just know that this guy told me there would NOT be a buyout regardless of what happens the final 2 games. Not saying I agree with it, but it is what it is. We have NO extra money to spend at SEMO?
My question is, assuming there is NO buyout, where is the line drawn next year for Samuel?
Roth, Leni is not a guy. :)
semoredhawk: Who's Leni? My info came from an attorney.
BIG AL!!!!
WKU fired Elison today. The shoes are starting to drop.
Guess that is Elson not Elison.. but you get the drift.
Elson had a $500k buyout on his K. Now that is a lot of money for a buyout.
Memphis fired their football coach today.
I don't think big AL could give 2 hoots about semo athletics.
FWIW, the murray game tonight starts at 10 CENTRAL time. My previous post was wrong.
RC, I think you are wrong on the Big Al thing. I think the former mayor is a big fan of SEMO athletics.
Let me clarify....I am thinking of the wrong lawyer AL. I have been brought up to speed. I apologize and take back the comment!!!!!!
semoredhawk: You are very correct. Al is very big supporter of SEMO athletics. I spoke with him the entire second half on Saturday about our Athletic Department and he's very concerned. He said they all are. They just don't have a ton of money to make drastic changes, meaning another buyout. They do have a lot of faith in Dickey Nutt, so we'll see how that turns out. They also think a new Offensive Coordinator could help as well.....but how much? Enough to give Samuel another year....maybe a 1-year extenstion if we get to 4-5 wins next year??
The girls got throttled tonight.
When is the last time that a division 1 athletic program went winless, back to back, in their conference basketball and conference football seasons? I doubt it has ever happened in the OVC. Are we on the verge of history?
81: I don't see that happening this year. Nutt has the guys working extremely hard and we'll manage a few OVC wins. It's not a very strong conference and we'll be in a lot of games.
Basketball went 0-18 in 2008-2009 and now football could possibly go 0-7? this year. That would be back-to-back embarassment...
Conference win for basketball? I'm trying to find ANY win on the schedule other than Williams Baptist, let alone an OVC game.
Murray looked darn good last night. Crap I hate that!! It makes no sense how they keep getting that good of talent down there. No excuse in my mind why SEMO can't get the type of kids that they do. SEMO allegedly has as nice, if not nicer, facility to play ball in..we are not in the middle of no-where Kentucky. I mean they went out to Oakland CA, and played straight up ball against the #12 team in the nation, having only played 1 exhibition game. What the heck.. Aska is a beast. He may make the OVC forget about Lester Hudson pretty quick.. gosh this burns my rear today!!
Austin Peay lost at home 81-68 to Central Missouri.
uh oh...here we go with facility talk again, I thought I read somewhere that murray just got a new floor and a video board put in? Maybe not though because their facilites page doesn't say anything about it. Must have been some where else
trolling this early in the morning?
Ouachita Baptist tonight.....every win is a good win
After a quick review of the murray media guide it does look they just put in a new floor and added TWO giant video boards on each end of the arena.
On another note I just realized their coaches have some nice backgrounds. Kennedy has coached at cal and players like J. Kidd, Robert Pack and Tony Gonzalez and it looks like one of the assistants is the brother of Shareef Abdur-Rahim...and one of the others coached lester hudson =P
Their media guide kind of looks like crap though so maybe we hold an advantage there! What's the deal with all the quotes inside of circles lol
I'm just saying I'm tired of seeing them with such darn good talent, when they have nothing on us in terms of facilities, location, etc. That talent is going to make Kennedy look like a lot better coach then he is, that is for sure!
SEMO's last OVC BB win was J29, 2008 vs AP
Someone will have to really look at this, because I'm not sure how it was actually applied, but SEMO's last official OVC win might have been F22, 2007 at Samford. Guess it depends on if they stripped that win vs AP from the books. The media guide shows that it counted, but I'm not 100% sure why.
07 - if we lose one more football game . . . it happens. Sure, they are in different academic years but the seasons are in the same calendar years. I just said back to back. No wins last year in bball. And likely no wins in football.
Austin Peay lost at home 81-68 to Central Missouri.
- Coached by Kim Anderson, right here in MO. I think Nutt will be fine, but wish Anderson would have been an option . . .
81: I don't see us beating Murray State on Saturday. But I really do think our men's BBall team can win a few OVC games.
I also think our mens bball wins a conference game or two. Maybe three, four, maybe five. But last season it was zero. This football season will be zero (unless we beat Murray). That's back to back. Consecutive. In a row. One followed by the other. Don't know why this doesn't make sense.
Central Missouri State is scary good. Nice to see them beat the Pi$$ out of Peay.
Any news on any potential signings in the early signing period?
"Any news on any potential signings in the early signing period?"
One possible. A 6'9" kid from Atlanta. A JUCO. That's all I know.
The kid you are referring to is Waylon Jones from Albany Tech CC in Atlanta. No clue if he is signing or not. I've heard his stats at Juco last year are less than inspiring, but I don't know if that is correct or not.
If you get a chance, watch Tommy West's post firing presser today. Great stuff. Not quite Dennis Green good, but pretty close.
