Nino Johnson's transfer not a done deal
Posted Wednesday, May 16, at 11:06 PM The news that forward Nino Johnson signed with Northeast Mississippi Community College Tuesday would be a big blow to the SEMO men's basketball team -- if Johnson does indeed leave the Redhawks. I've been told that is still to be determined because Johnson's family apparently knew nothing about his signing with the junior college and sources told me they would prefer he remain at SEMO...
New AD looks like a good fit Evaluating the hiring of an athletic director isn't easy because there are no quantifiable performance results like wins and losses. But on the surface, SEMO appears to have done well in landing 39-year-old Mark Alnutt. I thought Alnutt, a former Missouri football player who has spent the last 14 years at the state's flagship university, made a favorable first impression when he was introduced as SEMO's new athletic director last week...
Snyder leads battle to replace Scheible The battle to replace SEMO record-setting quarterback Matt Scheible begins in earnest Monday when the Redhawks open spring workouts. While the competition will certainly carry over into fall practice, it will be an upset if Kyle Snyder doesn't open the season as the Redhawks' starter...
Racers' sensational season ends Murray State put up a strong fight but third-seeded Marquette finally pulled away from the sixth-seeded Racers 62-53 in Saturday's NCAA tournament game. The Racers led 46-41 with under eight minutes left but were outscored 21-7 the rest of the way. So MSU's sensational season finally came to an end at 31-2 but not before the Racers gave the OVC an NCAA tournament win for the fourth straight year, thanks to Thursday's 58-41 victory over Colorado State...
SEMO drops heartbreaker It was a heartbreaker in Music City for the SEMO men's basketball team as the Redhawks nearly pulled off a comeback for the ages Thursday night. SEMO erased a 19-point second-half deficit and held a late four-point but Tennessee Tech surged back to win 77-73 win in the quarterfinals of the OVC tournament in Nashville, Tenn...
SEMO struggling entering tournament The SEMO men's basketball team will enter the OVC tournament looking to regain the momentum it possessed until just recently. The Redhawks are in the postseason event for the second consecutive year after not making the field since the 2006-07 campaign, but some SEMO fans probably are bummed over the Redhawks' current season-high four-game losing streak and the fact they didn't earn one of the tournament's first-round byes...
Great atmosphere at Show Me Center The SEMO men's basketball team turned back the clock Wednesday night. It was certainly a sight to behold. The fifth-largest crowd for a SEMO home game came to see the Redhawks host a nationally ranked Division I opponent for the first time. Murray State spoiled the party with a 75-66 victory but that in no way detracted from what was the best and most electric atmosphere for a SEMO basketball game in Cape Girardeau in more than a decade...
No more tickets left for SEMO-Murray I just got the word that there are no more tickets remaining for tonight's OVC basketball showdown between SEMO and Murray State at the Show Me Center. That means the contest is officially a sellout and should rank among the top few crowds to ever see a basketball game in Cape Girardeau...
Powell on ESPN top plays The SEMO men's basketball team fell short of its upset bid at Murray State Thursday night but the Redhawks' strong showing on national television netted plenty of positive publicity. Leading the way during the 81-73 loss was senior forward Leon Powell's monster one-handed follow dunk early in the second half...
SEMO product headed to Super Bowl There will be a SEMO flavor to the Super Bowl. Dan Connolly, a four-year all-Ohio Valley Conference offensive lineman for the Redhawks from 2001 through 2004, is the Patriots' starting center. Connolly, in his sixth NFL season, originally made the NFL as an undrafted free agent. He spent a majority of his first few campaigns either inactive or on practice squads but has been a starter the past two years...
SEMO on a roll but tough tests await Excitement continues to build for the SEMO men's basketball team, which is off to its best start in more than a decade. The Redhawks are now 5-1 in OVC play, continuing the program's best conference start since 1999-2000 season. They are second in the 11-team league, trailing nationally ranked Murray State by one game...
Despite tough loss, SEMO off to strong OVC start The SEMO men's basketball team suffered its first OVC loss of the season Saturday night, 63-59 at Eastern Kentucky. It's a game the Redhawks are no doubt kicking themselves over because they could have and probably should have won. They led much of the way and absolutely killed themselves by making just 4 of 13 free throws...
Redhawks put it all together in OVC opener The SEMO men's basketball team picked a good time to put together arguably its best 40-minute performance of the season. SEMO was highly impressive during Wednesday night's 67-51 rout of visiting Morehead State in the OVC opener. The Redhawks' offense has been fairly consistent all season but not so much their defense, which has displayed major holes much of the campaign...
Transfer quarterbacks appear headed to SEMO According to various internet reports, the SEMO football program will add two transfer quarterbacks from the Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division I-A). Trent Hurley and Kyle Snyder were both redshirt freshmen reserves at their respective Mid-American Conference schools this year...
Redhawks can't find any consistency Every time it looks like the SEMO men's basketball team might be ready to take off, the Redhawks take a step back. That happened again Monday night when they were hammered 88-72 at Central Arkansas, which is greatly improved this season but still went 5-24 a year ago...
SEMO finally displays defense to notch big win The SEMO men's basketball team turned in its best all-around performance of the young season Saturday to beat visiting Miami of Ohio 64-57. Southeast needed to play well because Miami ranks among the better teams the Redhawks will face. Maybe not quite the caliber of Missouri or Oregon but every bit as talented as any OVC squad and more talented than most...
Redhawks suffer tough loss The SEMO men's basketball team suffered a tough loss Wednesday night, 66-65 at Bradley. I didn't go to the game but I saw a replay of the foul called on Michael Porter with 4.6 seconds left after Bradley scored the tying basket. It looked like there was hardly any contact, if there was any at all. The Braves nailed the game-winning free throw...
SEMO puts up fight before MU pulls away The SEMO men's basketball team put up a fight against 25th-ranked Missouri in Friday night's season opener in Columbia. SEMO, looking so much better than it did during Monday's exhibition loss to Division II Harding, led by six points late in the first half and trailed by just two points at halftime...
Good news on Powell The SEMO men's basketball program received good news Tuesday when an MRI on senior forward Leon Powell's left knee showed no structural damage. Powell injured the knee during an awkward landing early in Monday's 68-63 exhibition loss to Harding. He played only six minutes...
SEMO soccer season ends with tourney loss The SEMO soccer team saw its season end Friday night with a 2-1 loss to Morehead State in the OVC tournament semifinals at Houck Stadium. Top-seeded SEMO, the OVC regular-season champion, led 1-0 at halftime. Fifth-seeded Morehead tied it early in the second half and scored the winning goal with just 52 seconds left...
