Josh has covered legends like Joe Paterno, Hall of Famers like Brett Favre, future-pros like Matt Adams (when he was just an amateur with local tall tales about his ability to hit the stitches off a baseball) and multiple All-Americans. He has covered undefeated teams and winless teams; budding prospects and total busts.
Now, the land of semoball.
Olympic Update
Earlier this month we ran a story on Cape Girardeau chiropractor Matt Uchtman, who is part of a contingent working behind the scenes at the Rio Olympic Games with USA Wrestling.
The wrestling competition began at the start of this week, and last night Helen Maroulis became the first American to ever win a gold medal in women's wrestling, defeating arguably the greatest women's wrestler in history in the gold-medal match.
Meanwhile, Uchtman has been working with the wrestlers to help them mentally and physically prepare for the rigors of the Games.
On Thursday he emailed me a brief update on his experience so far:
"Overall, the experience down here has been great. Up to this point safety hasn't been a real concern and culture is great. The venues are nice and clean and well secured. The only real issue at times is transportation -- traffic is pretty rough and it can take up to an hour to go 10 miles or so.
"Freestyle wrestling has kicked in and the women brought home their first gold yesterday. The men really crank it up today. We will see how they do. I also get the opportunity to see men's basketball today as well. This has been an amazing experience so far!"
Wrestling wraps up on Sunday, as does the Olympics.
American Jordan Burroughs, one of the favorites at 74 kilograms (163 pounds), was knocked out in the quarterfinals this morning. He will wrestle again today in the repachage round -- a loser's bracket that still gives him a chance at a bronze medal.
