OVC Player of the Year Ashia Jones dismissed from UT Martin's women's basketball team

The Ohio Valley Conference's Female Athlete of the Year and women's basketball Player of the Year, Ashia Jones, has been dismissed from the UT Martin women's basketball team, the athletics department announced Friday.

No specific reason was given for her dismissal from the program.

"It is an honor and a privilege to represent UT Martin, not just on the basketball court but in any walk of life," UT Martin coach Kevin McMillan said in a press release. "Ashia is in good academic standing and has not had any legal troubles whatsoever but she has not been able to abide by the standards we set for our program on a consistent basis. We wish her all the best in her future endeavors."

The 6-foot-1 forward averaged 23.4 points per game as a sophomore, which was tops in the OVC and ranked fourth nationally.

Jones, who helped the Skyhawks to back to back regular-season championships, was the OVC's Freshman of the year in 2014.

She became the third-fastest Skyhawks player to reach 1,000 points in her career by doing so in 57 games. Jones tied the school record for single-game scoring with 44 points against Murray State on Jan. 31, 2015. Her 772 points as a sophomore broke the program's single-season scoring record.

UT Martin became the sixth team in OVC history to post a perfect conference season, going 16-0 in OVC action in 2015.
