Bess wins No. 1,100

The Raiders held on for a 93-92 overtime win as sophomore guard Nick Niemczyk hit two free throws with 1.2 seconds remaining to give Bess the bench mark win after losses to Moberly and State Fair on Friday and Saturday.

"I think that is just typical of how tough it is to win in junior college," Bess said. "I think (some people) start thinking, 'oh you will get it, (it's) a piece of cake.'

"It has never been a piece of cake and it wasn't a piece of cake this year. Every one of those 1,100 games, we have sweated blood."

Niemczyk was pleased the third try was a charm for the coach in his 40th season.

"Coach Gene, he's a special coach, nobody is better than him," Niemczyk said. "We are just happy we could help him get that 1,100th."

Niemczyk led the Raiders with 26 points and sophomore Richard Walker had 19 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Marquise Carter rounded out the players in double figures with 15 points.

The game was a rematch of the last season's district playoff which Highland won.
